Last month marks three years since Dr Jim MacKenzie performed the world’s first Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing (PHR®) procedure in Calgary on 15th November 2022, a milestone in orthopaedic surgery.
The procedure, introduced during an event celebrating Dr MacKenzie’s 20 years of experience in hip resurfacing, showcased the latest metal-on-polyethylene implant design from JointMedica. Designed for active patients seeking bone-conserving alternatives to traditional hip arthroplasty devices, the Polymotion® system combines a Vitamin E-infused polyethylene cup with a titanium coating and a metal femoral cap, thus avoiding metal-on-metal articulation while maintaining excellent range of motion and implant stability.

Dr MacKenzie is an orthopaedic surgeon renowned for his expertise in hip and knee replacements and is considered one of the most experienced and respected hip resurfacing surgeons in Canada. Reflecting on the milestone, he said: “Introducing the Polymotion® Hip Resurfacing procedure was a milestone that set a new direction in Hip Arthroplasty, and three years on, it’s remarkable to see how this groundbreaking addition to the resurfacing arena is transforming outcomes for active patients. By introducing a bearing that eliminates the issues of metal and ceramic debris generation while improving biomechanical loading of the peri-acetabular bone, this innovation is helping patients preserve their joints and maintain their lifestyle. I’m proud to be part of a development that is reshaping the future of hip surgery.”
Fast forward three years, and the Polymotion® system is now part of an IDE clinical trial in the USA and is fully available in New Zealand, offering patients a new bone-conserving alternative to total hip replacement.
JointMedica’ s Chief Commercial Officer Tim Band stated “This milestone isn’t just about a new surgical device. It reflects decades of expertise, continuous innovation, and a commitment to improving patient outcomes in joint preservation, particularity for active patients.”
This marks a pivotal moment for JointMedica, and we look forward to sharing our continued growth.
