Resurfacing Hip Arthroplasty Is a Safe and Effective Alternative to Total Hip Arthroplasty in Young Patient

Palazzuolo (et al, 2023) declared “Resurfacing Hip Arthroplasty Is a Safe and Effective Alternative to Total Hip Arthroplasty in Young Patients”.

In a recent systematic review and meta-analysis published last month, Resurfacing Hip Arthroplasty (RHA) and Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA) were compared in terms of rate of complications, revisions, functional outcomes, blood loss, operative time, and metal ion levels to provide informantion on the most suitable procedure to address patients affected by hip osteoarthritis.

The study consisted of a total of 776 patients, 373 patients in the RHA group and 403 patients in the THA group. Both RHA and THA were found to provide satisfactory results in young and middle-aged patients.

The results from the study concluded, that while RHA presented a longer operative time, it caused significantly lower blood loss and similar satisfactory functional results, with no significant difference in metal ion levels. Complication and revision rates were also not significantly different between the groups.

The study highlighted consistently reported key advantages of HRA over THA to include:

-        a return to high-level sports

-        low rates of wear

-        preservation of femoral bone stock

-        potentially improved coxo-femoral kinematics

-        a low risk of instability and dislocation.

This meta-analysis sheds new light on the interpretation of the controversial literature results questioning the benefits and risks of Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty and will enable greater informed decisions between patients and healthcare professionals; especially for those who are younger and follow an active lifestyle.
