Surgeon Spotlight - Mr Derek McMinn, FRCS

This months surgeon spotlight is on Mr. Derek McMinn, FRCS.

Mr McMinn uses the both the BKR and Custom hip implants at his Private clinic.


Affectionately referred to as the ‘Father of Modern Hip Resurfacing’, Mr McMinn is one of the world’s leading hip and knee experts and the inventor of the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR)®. Having performed over 3500 Metal-on-Metal Hip Resurfacings over the course of 20 years, he is the most experienced surgeon in this field


Mr McMinn graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital in London, gaining the Cheselden Medal & 1st Prize in Surgery and moved to Birmingham. It was during his time at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital that he undertook numerous Orthopaedic fellowships at the top joint replacement centres around the world. Taking the opportunity to work alongside world renowned orthopaedic surgeons such as Bucholz, Engelbrecht, at the Endo Clinic Germany, Insall, and Ranawat at the Hospital for Special Surgery New York, Wagner, Germany and Harris, USA.


Mr McMinn is the founder and owner of Jointmedica Ltd.

Clinical interests 

Mr McMinn is a true orthopaedic innovator and dedicated designer surgeon, who is relentless in his drive for Orthopaedic excellence. The introduction of the McMinn Resurfacing in 1991, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) in 1997, the Birmingham Mid-Head Resection (BMHR) device in 2003 and the Birmingham Knee Replacement (BKR) in 2007, identify the Birmingham Brand devices which have gone on to define Primary Hip and Knee surgery.


Most recently a new generation of Hip Resurfacing device has been developed by McMinn. Extensive research and laboratory tests have led to the design of the Custom Polyethylene Hip Resurfacing.

NHS Base

Mr McMinn now works exclusively in the Private arena. However, he is often called upon to offer advice and support to Surgeons throughout the world in relation to the treatment of complex Hip and Knee pathology.  A prolific author and teacher he has addressed international conferences organized by the American, Canadian, British, European, Australian, Asia-Pacific and Japanese Orthopaedic Associations and several others as a distinguished guest lecturer. In addition to receiving honours of distinction from several quarters, the University of Birmingham has conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Medicine Honoris Causa in recognition of his sterling contributions to the medical profession.
