Introduction / The Role

Applications are invited for the post of Manufacturing Development Engineer

This post will provide engineering support working on projects under the guidance of the Technical Director.

Our manufacturing development interests are focused at Hip and Knee Orthopaedic products, covering a wide range of processes and a variety of medical grade metals and polymers. This processing is largely in the subcontractor base, but a number of key processes are to be focused on in-house facilities. The responsibility is from raw material supply through to sterile packed implantable product.

The project content includes the specification, testing, installation and validation of suitable manufacturing equipment followed by ongoing support. You will also be developing bespoke equipment, tooling, work methods and standards in order to ensure the safe and effective implementation of processes which include:-

  • CNC Turning and Milling processes

  • Bonding processes

  • Inspection and test methods

  • Finishing and Cleaning Processes

In line with our responsibilities as legal manufacturer of medical grade products, you may also be required to work with the subcontractor base to introduce new product as well as optimising existing products/processes.

Key requirements

Ideally you will have engineering experience in a medical device machining and processing environment, and have familiarity with typical orthopaedic implantable grade materials.

You will have a good understanding of medical device quality systems pertinent to manufacturing and processing, and will assist in the development of the controls and methods necessary to ensure safe and effective manufacture.

You will have a good appreciation of the Health and Safety implications of your work, and will always work in a way to minimise any risks in a practicable manner.

You will be prepared and able to operate the processes and systems and will be able to train others.

You will have an engineering qualification, served apprenticeship or equivalent with a practical bias.


Job Responsibilities:

  • Maximizing the effectiveness of the Jointmedica manufacturing processes.

  • Ensuring the safety and efficacy of the Jointmedica processes and ensuring that your areas of responsibility conform to the requirements of the Jointmedica quality system

  • The development and implementation of new manufacturing processes and technologies.

  • Developing project specifications and engineering solutions through teamwork with colleagues, suppliers and subcontractors

  • Helping to develop budgets, timescales and specifications with colleagues, suppliers and contractors

  • Ensuring that designs, specifications, methods, and results are suitably documented and controlled.

  • Working effectively with other professionals, within and outside the engineering sector

Required Job Skills:

  • Has understanding of applicable quality/regulatory systems

  • Has appropriate skills in machine tool programming, CAD, CAM and inspection processes.

  • Has an appropriate knowledge of relevant materials, treatments and finishing processes.

  • Knowledge and skills in general machining processes, tooling and fixturing

  • Has an appropriate knowledge of risk management and safe systems of work

  • Is creative as well as possessing good practical and problem solving skills

  • Has the ability to work under pressure.

  • Possesses good interpersonal and teamworking skills.

  • Can demonstrate good verbal, written, numerical and communication skills.

  • Is commercially aware.


  • Relevant degree or Higher national diploma (HND) mechanical engineering.

  • Relevant applications training



£35,000 to £60,000 dependent on experience.
