BKR Case Study - Bob Harris

Bob Harris, a 56-year-old engineer, works as part of a team which manufactures parts for satellites, Formula 1 and medical implants at Wines.

Bob's Interview

I started experiencing knee problems around 5 years ago. These worsened to the point where everyday movement was affected and I could no longer enjoy walking my dogs or cycling.

In my job, I am actively involved with the ongoing manufacturing of the Birmingham knee replacement, and I was originally involved with Jointmedica during the early stages of manufacturing planning. Specifically, I am responsible for the finishing process after the parts leave the CNC machine, ensuring that the knee is in perfect condition ready for the surgeon to use when the box is opened.

My involvement with the manufacture of the Birmingham knee made it a natural option for me when my GP proposed knee replacement surgery. I believe It has a superior design, and due to my age would last well. I was very fortunate to have Mr. McMinn (The device inventor) perform the surgery.

Although painful initially, I am now 3 months into my recovery after the operation. I can cycle and swim with ease, and I am already able to walk over three miles with little pain. I see steady improvement in my recovery. The biggest change to my day-to-day life after my BKR surgery is the ability to resume the activities I enjoyed before knee pain, particularly being able to walk long distances with my greyhounds virtually pain free.

I would recommend the Birmingham knee to other patients requiring knee replacement surgery - you only need to look at the ODEP rating and other testimonials on this website to be reassured.

Personally, I have seen a real improvement in the quality of my mobility, and a reduction in pain. I am pleased to be involved in the manufacturing of a device which helps so many people regain their mobility.
